Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, today said that the National Sample Survey (NSS) has played an instrumental role in shaping the socio-economic landscape of the country since its inception in 1950. Addressing an event organised by the Ministry to celebrate the 75th year of NSS in New Delhi, Mr. Singh credited the NSS for providing critical insights into employment, health, education, industry, and several other sectors.
The minister added that from understanding poverty and unemployment to assessing literacy and health concerns, NSS has been a trusted source of information. He further asserted that today NSS stands as a symbol of excellence in data collection and compilation not just in India but across the globe. Mentioning important surveys like the Periodic Labour Force Survey and the Annual Survey of Industries, the minister said that the statistics organisation is actively shaping the policy landscape of the nation.
The event primarily focused on highlighting the role of National Sample Survey data in evidence-based policymaking, raising awareness among the general public regarding the value of data in nation-building, and engaging stakeholders and data users, among others.
During the event, two Diamond Jubilee publications titled The Household and Enterprise Surveys of NSS were published as a resource for conducting similar NSS surveys.
