Agartala, May 15 (FD) Tripura Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Saturday assured residents that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, LPG, or essential commodities in the state, urging people not to panic or crowd petrol pumps unnecessarily.
Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat, the minister said a high-level review meeting was convened with Food Department Secretary K. Sasikumar, Director Sumit Lodh, representatives of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, along with officials from the Sadar, Jirania and Mohanpur subdivisions and other departmental officers.
According to the minister, the meeting confirmed that adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are available at all 149 petrol pumps across Tripura. He also stated that LPG supplies remain sufficient across the state and clarified that the government is not introducing any rationing system at present.
Referring to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Chowdhury said concerns over global fuel supply disruptions had led to speculation, but reports of any fuel crisis in Tripura were “baseless and misleading.” He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to citizens to conserve fuel as a precautionary measure, and the state government has adopted similar preparedness steps.
The minister further informed that the state currently has substantial reserves of essential commodities under both the public distribution system and the open market. Under the PDS, Tripura has stock for 84 days of rice, 57 days of wheat, 28 days of sugar and 34 days of masur dal.
In the open market, reserves include 84 days of rice, 38 days of masur dal, 87 days of edible oil, 32 days of onions, 18 days of potatoes, 37 days of flour, 31 days of sugar and 122 days of salt.
Warning against black marketing or artificial shortages, Chowdhury said strict action would be taken against violators. Officials have been directed to conduct regular inspections at markets and petrol pumps across the state.
Responding to queries on fuel transportation in large drums, the minister clarified that fuel is being supplied for infrastructure projects through slips issued by Sub-Divisional Magistrates, adding that stricter norms for issuing such slips would soon be implemented. FD SB
