Agartala, June 20 (FD) Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is set to introduce an electric Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service between Agartala and Karimganj, NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Srivastava announced during his visit to Tripura on Friday.
Addressing a press conference at Agartala Railway Station, Srivastava said the MEMU service would be launched shortly and would be the first electric MEMU train to operate under the Northeast Frontier Railway network. He described the service as a significant step towards modernising rail transportation in the region.
MEMU trains are designed for short and medium-distance travel and offer faster acceleration, improved energy efficiency, enhanced passenger comfort and the capacity to carry a large number of commuters. The proposed Agartala-Karimganj service is expected to greatly benefit daily passengers travelling between Tripura and southern Assam.
Highlighting another key achievement, the NFR General Manager announced the completion of railway electrification from Sabroom in southern Tripura to Guwahati. The development is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce dependence on diesel locomotives and facilitate smoother movement of both passenger and freight trains across the Northeast.
Srivastava also reviewed the progress of infrastructure projects being undertaken in Tripura under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He said Agartala Railway Station is undergoing extensive redevelopment, including the construction of a modern three-storey station building. The first phase of the project, estimated at ₹48 crore, is expected to be completed by March 2027.
Modernisation works at Udaipur Railway Station in Gomati district and Kumarghat Railway Station in Unakoti district are also progressing rapidly and are likely to be completed by September this year, he said.
During the visit, Srivastava inaugurated newly installed lifts on Platforms 1 and 2 at Agartala Railway Station and inspected passenger facilities, including waiting rooms, ticket counters, Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs), security systems and retiring rooms.
He further informed that freight operations through Nischintapur Railway Station are being conducted regularly, strengthening logistics connectivity in the state. Infrastructure works involving Indian Railways, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the State Public Works Department at Sekerkot Railway Station are also nearing completion.
Looking ahead, Srivastava said railway authorities are exploring the possibility of laying a double railway line between Badarpur and Agartala to further enhance capacity and connectivity. He added that a minor power supply issue on the New Haflong section is being addressed. FD JK
