NFR Successfully Conducts Electric Loco Trials in Two Newly Electrified Sections
By Firstdespatch Desk Jan 31, 2025
Maligaon, Jan 31 (FD) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making significant progress in its electrification mission, aiming for a fully electrified and zero-carbon rail network as part of Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainable development. As of December 2024, NFR has successfully electrified approximately 2,828 Route Kilometers (RKM), achieving nearly 70% electrification in the zone. This initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions and enhance operational efficiency across the NFR rail network.
In a major step toward operationalizing electric traction in additional sections, electric locomotive trials were successfully conducted over two sections of NFR. The first trial took place between Agartala and Sabroom (112.91 RKM) in the Lumding Division on January 29, 2025. This was followed by another successful trial between New Coochbehar and Bamanhat (49.81 RKM) in the Alipurduar Division on January 30 and 31, 2025. Both trials were conducted at maximum sectional speed and mark a crucial milestone in transitioning to electric locomotion. These efforts will soon enable the operation of electric-driven trains in these sections, ensuring faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly train services in the region.
The ongoing electrification drive in NFR is set to transform rail connectivity in Northeast India. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, enhance train speeds, lower operational costs, and significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the vision of a carbon-neutral railway network. With these advancements, NFR is paving the way for a greener and more sustainable railway transportation system. PRESS RELEASE
