In a significant policy update, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the new Aadhaar law will be harmonised with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) 2023. This move is aimed at ensuring that user privacy and data protection remain at the core of the legislation.
Speaking about the evolution of the Aadhaar framework, the Minister acknowledged that when the Aadhaar Act was initially enacted, there were several gaps in the legal structure. However, with the introduction of the DPDPA, these gaps have now been addressed, offering a more robust framework for protecting personal data.
Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s commitment to bringing a modern version of the Aadhaar Act, one that puts users — especially the poor and middle-class — at the centre of the digital ecosystem. He underlined the importance of legislation that is both forward-looking and rooted in the principles of transparency and accountability.
The revised Aadhaar law will mark a shift towards greater user empowerment, aligning India’s digital identity infrastructure with global standards of data protection and privacy.
