Agartala, May 27 (FD) In a significant stride towards promoting and protecting the unique agricultural produce of the North-eastern region, the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) organized an awareness seminar on Geographical Indication (GI) in Agartala.
The event focused on authorizing 300 farmers to use GI tagging for the NERAMAC processed certification, with a special emphasis on the renowned Tripura Queen Pineapple.
Tripura's agriculture minister, Ratan Lal Nath, graced the occasion and highlighted the importance of the GI initiative in safeguarding traditional farming practices and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Minister Nath emphasized that the GI tag provides recognition to distinctive products, such as the Tripura Queen Pineapple, and protects them from misuse and imitation. He also mentioned the abundance of other exclusive products in Tripura, including indigenous rice beer, jackfruit, and the traditional dish 'Gudak,' all deeply rooted in the state's rich cultural heritage.
NERAMAC's managing director, Rajiv Ashok, shed light on the significance of GI certification for the North-eastern region's agricultural practices and products. Ashok stated that the initiative enhances the competitiveness of regional products in domestic and international markets while creating opportunities for increased income and livelihood.
The event also welcomed Dr. Rajni Kant Dwivedi, a renowned GI expert and Padma Shree awardee, who emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach in promoting region-specific GI products, contributing to local employment opportunities.
The GI certification process for the Tripura Queen Pineapple has garnered significant support from the farming community, including over 200 Queen Pineapple producers in attendance. The certification not only acknowledges the unique taste and texture of this exclusive horticulture produce grown in Tripura but also establishes its distinct identity in global markets.
The GI tag provides assurance to buyers regarding the authenticity and quality of the product, boosting consumer confidence and facilitating agricultural exports.
The event also witnessed the distribution of GI tagging certifications to 200 farmers by NERAMAC, ensuring the protection and promotion of the Tripura Queen Pineapple. Apurba Roy, Secretary of Agriculture, Tripura, also graced the occasion and expressed enthusiasm for the state's potential in qualifying more products for GI certification.
