Agartala, May 5 (FD) A political storm has erupted in North Tripura following the sudden and unexplained death of a young local leader, intensifying tensions within the ruling party and drawing widespread public attention.
Rahul Kishore Roy, a BJP Yuva Morcha Mandal President and councillor of Ward No. 5 under Dharmanagar Municipal Council, was found dead inside the bathroom of his residence under circumstances that remain unclear. A party scarf reportedly tied around his neck has raised serious questions, with authorities yet to determine whether the case involves suicide or possible foul play.
Family members have made startling allegations, claiming that a group of local BJP youth leaders visited their residence twice on the day before the incident. According to Roy’s wife, the visitors attempted to enter the house and accused him of working against the party’s official candidate during the recent Dharmanagar by-election. She stated that the family kept the doors locked, preventing any direct confrontation.
The timing of the incident, coinciding with celebrations following the by-election results, has added to suspicions of internal discord. Local sources have pointed to possible factional tensions within the party, which may have escalated in recent weeks.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed grief over the death and assured that the allegations raised by the family would be investigated thoroughly. He emphasized that the probe would be conducted in a fair and impartial manner, with legal action to follow based on verified findings.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Officials confirmed that forensic examinations and medical reports are awaited to establish the exact cause of death. Authorities have also urged the public to refrain from speculation until conclusive evidence emerges.
The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, with opposition parties demanding an independent inquiry and civil society groups calling for transparency. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have appealed for restraint, urging that the matter not be politicized prematurely.
As the investigation progresses, the case continues to dominate political discourse in Tripura, raising concerns about internal conflicts and the security of grassroots political workers. FD JK
