Agartala, April 23 (FD) In a bid to further boost the city’s infrastructure and civic amenities, Mayor Deepak Majumdar on Wednesday presented the Agartala Municipal Corporation’s budget for the fiscal year 2025–26, reflecting a deficit of ₹72.02 lakhs. The budget was unveiled at the Municipal Corporation's conference hall, projecting a total revenue and capital income of ₹475.83 crore against an expenditure of ₹476.55 crore.
Compared to the 2024–25 financial year—which saw an income of ₹415.97 crore and expenditure of ₹416.74 crore—the upcoming year shows an increased income of ₹59.86 crore and a slightly lesser increase in expenditure by ₹59.81 crore. This difference is primarily attributed to the launch of new developmental projects.
Mayor Majumdar emphasized that the deficit will be managed through internal revenue sources and government grants. The enhanced budget was made possible with support from the 15th Finance Commission, state tax shares, and funding from centrally-sponsored schemes such as TULM, SBM, PMAY Urban, Smart City Mission, and NULM.
Major capital expenditures in the new budget include infrastructure upgrades and civic development initiatives. Highlights include the construction of three flood pump houses at Shakuntala Road, Ramnagar 4 No. Road, and Satsang Ashram costing ₹28 crore, and the development of drainage and pump systems estimated at ₹4 crore.
Further provisions include ₹5 crore for extending electrification, road, and drainage systems, ₹56 lakh for a modern slaughterhouse at Durga Chaumuhani, and ₹3.30 crore for electric crematoriums at three city cremation grounds. Beautification and reconstruction of five major ponds will be carried out at an estimated cost of ₹17 crore.
₹11 crore has been proposed to improve drinking water facilities across the city. The budget also emphasizes public health, with a fivefold increase in funds for mosquito fogging operations.
A major healthcare initiative includes the establishment of a 50-bed “Agartala Civil Hospital” near Junction Gate at ₹10 crore, offering 24x7 OPD services and essential medicines.
Additionally, a new welfare scheme—“Bharat Mata Canteen cum Night Shelter”—will be launched with ₹2 crore allocated. Permanent buildings will be constructed in several key markets within the municipal area.
To support citywide infrastructure development, the Asian Development Bank has promised ₹1200 crore in financial assistance. The recently introduced Auto-DCR system will also streamline the building plan approval process under the Tripura Building Rules 2017. FD SB
