Agartala, Sept 27 (FD) Former Tripura Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar’s convoy was allegedly stopped and an escort vehicle vandalised at Kalibazar in the Bamutia area on Sunday morning, with the CPI(M) alleging that BJP-backed miscreants were behind the incident.
According to the CPI(M), the incident occurred around 10 am when Sarkar was travelling through Kalibazar to attend the party’s Bamutia Area Conference. A group of people allegedly stopped the convoy and blocked the road, preventing it from moving forward for around 30–40 minutes.
Party sources further alleged that one of the vehicles accompanying Sarkar was vandalised during the confrontation. The CPI(M) claimed that the situation remained tense while the convoy was prevented from proceeding.
Following the incident, CPI(M) supporters, including members of the party’s youth organisation, reportedly gathered at the spot and protested against the alleged attack. According to the party, the situation eased after its supporters intervened, following which the alleged attackers left the area.
Sarkar subsequently continued his journey and attended the Bamutia Area Conference as scheduled.
The incident comes amid heightened political activity in Tripura ahead of the TTAADC Village Committee elections scheduled for September 28. Political parties have intensified campaigning across the ADC areas, while allegations of clashes, intimidation and attacks involving rival political groups have surfaced from several parts of the state.
The CPI(M) has raised concerns over the political environment surrounding the elections, while the ruling alliance has rejected allegations of political intimidation.
The latest incident is expected to draw attention to security arrangements for senior political leaders and the maintenance of law and order during the ongoing election period. FD JK
