Mamata requests PM Modi to allow Sourav Ganguly to contest ICC elections

Kolkata/IBNS: In her first comment on Sourav Gangulys unceremonious exit from the Indian cricket board BCCI, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow the former skipper to contest the ICC elections.

Speaking to the reporters, Mamata said, I request the Prime Minister to make sure Sourav Ganguly must be allowed to contest the ICC election...

I request the Government of India not to take a decision politically, but for cricket, sports... He is not a political party member, she added.

Citing Union Home Minister Amit Shahs son Jay Shahs extension of his tenure as the BCCI secretary, the Chief Minister, who is opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), implied rejection of Gangulys second term was motivated.

She has also referred to Ganguly as the pride of the country.

Meanwhile, Ganguly has announced his decision to contest the upcoming elections to the presidents post in Bengal crickets governing body, CAB.

Ganguly Saturday said, The nomination filing date is Oct 22. I am going to contest the elections.
