M A Baby Elected CPI-M General Secretary at 24th Party Congress

Former Kerala Minister M A Baby has been elected as the 6th General Secretary of the CPI-M at the 24th Party Congress which concluded at Madurai in Tamil Nadu today.

Mr Baby, along with 18 Politburo members, was elected to the party’s top post at the first meeting of the CPI-M Central Committee. The Party Congress also elected the Central Committee, comprising 85 members.

M A Baby, who served as the Minister of Education and Culture in the VS Achuthanandan cabinet from 2006 to 2011, has been a member of the Politburo, the highest decision-making body of the party, for nearly 13 years. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1998. He succeeds Sitaram Yechury, who passed away last year.
