LoP writes to DGP alleging police failure over Belonia violence, seeks action against South Tripura SP

Agartala, July 17 (FD) A day after the The All India Services Association, Tripura Chapter condemned the remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury against the Superintendent of Police (SP) of South Tripura district, Chowdhury on Friday wrote to the Director General of Police (DGP)  about serious lapses by him in handling law and order .
Leader of the Opposition alleged that the Superintendent of Police (SP), South Tripura, in handling law and order during a CPI(M) programme at Chottakhola in Belonia on July 15, and has sought action against the officer.
In his letter, Chaudhury alleged that despite prior police permission and repeated requests for adequate security, anti-social elements disrupted the CPI(M) programme organised to mark the second death anniversary of party leader Badal Shil. He claimed a party delegation had met the District Magistrate and SP on July 13 to seek security arrangements, while he had also spoken to the DGP a day before the event and was assured of necessary measures.
The Opposition leader alleged that BJP supporters gathered near the venue, intimidated attendees and vandalised vehicles carrying CPI(M) supporters. He claimed five to six party workers were injured in the attack despite the presence of police personnel and alleged that the South Tripura SP did not respond to his phone calls during the violence.
Chaudhury further alleged that police repeatedly stopped his convoy en route to Chottakhola, delaying his arrival by more than an hour, and later prevented him and other CPI(M) leaders from reaching the programme venue instead of acting against those responsible for the violence.
Calling the police response a violation of democratic and constitutional rights, Chaudhury held the South Tripura SP responsible for "inefficiency, inaction and security mismanagement" and urged the DGP to personally intervene, examine the officer's conduct and ensure accountability.
The allegations have been made by the Leader of the Opposition in his letter to the DGP. Tripura Police and the South Tripura district administration had not issued any official response to the allegations at the time of filing this report. FD JK
