Agartala, Jan 15 (FD) Opposition Congress legislator, Birajit Sinha today expressed his deep concern about the construction of a high dam by Bangladesh authorities along the Manu river, which could lead to a devastating flood at Kailashahar, the district headquarters Unakoti.
Raising the issue at the 13th session of the Tripura assembly on Wednesday Sinha alerted the house that on completion of the dam in Bangladesh side the flood situation could turn into a catastrophic situation in the district town.
He suggested that the existing dam was built at Kailashahar about 40 years ago which is in shamble due to lack of proper maintenance and urged the Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha for his interference.
Sinha said that the existing dam infrastructure, originally planned to extend 7 km from Rangauti Gram Panchayat to Kailashahar should immediately be properly repaired and further extended.
The state minister for Animal Husbandry, Sudhngshu Das while supporting the causes highlighted by Sinha said, it is a big concern for the people living in the district and also expressed his concern for trans-border crime and infiltration along the border and urged the Chief Minister to take immediate step to avoid any loss.
Chief Minister in reply to the concerns of the legislators said that the matter was being properly addressed and the central government was alerted about the issue to take proper steps. FD JK
