Agartala, July 2 (FD) The Tripura Left Front on Thursday demanded that the state government immediately withdraw its decision to prohibit private practice by doctors attached to GB Pant Hospital, alleging that the move has aggravated the state's already fragile healthcare system.
Addressing a press conference in Agartala, Left Front Convener Manik Dey said Tripura has been facing an acute shortage of doctors, nurses and other healthcare personnel for years. He argued that the ban on private practice was imposed without adequate consultation with the medical fraternity and has adversely affected patients by limiting access to healthcare services.
Dey urged the government to suspend the decision and resolve the issue through discussions with doctors and other stakeholders, warning that the present policy would only increase public hardship.
The press conference was attended by CPI State Secretary Milan Baidya, RSP State Secretary Dipak Deb, Forward Bloc leader Raghunath Sarkar, and CPI(M) leader Rajendra Reang.
The Left Front also strongly opposed the recent hike in electricity tariffs and additional fixed charges imposed on consumers. Dey alleged that the government was shifting the financial burden of administrative lapses and uncollected dues of the power utility onto ordinary consumers. He further claimed that losses arising from outstanding dues allegedly left behind by a private company were being recovered from the public. The Front demanded the immediate withdrawal of the tariff hike, fixed charges and the proposed installation of smart meters.
Raising another issue, Dey demanded the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the unnatural death of an employee of Tripura Santiniketan Medical College, asserting that an impartial investigation was necessary to determine whether it was a case of suicide or murder.
The Left Front also expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of national highways, particularly in Khowai district, alleging that poor-quality construction has contributed to an increase in road accidents.
On the recent eviction of street vendors in Agartala, Dey alleged that hawkers were removed without adequate rehabilitation or due process, and urged the government to ensure their proper resettlement.
The Left Front called on the state government to address all these issues through dialogue and adopt immediate corrective measures. FD JK
