Agartala, Jan 16 (FD)Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha Thursday said that the law and order situation in the state has improved with the sincere works rendered by the state police.
He said this while addressing the Tripura Police Week celebration at the Manoranjan Debbarma Memorial Stadium in Arundhutinagar.
During his address, the Chief Minister stated that the state government is committed to maintaining law and order in Tripura. He highlighted that overall crime in 2024 decreased by 19.3% compared to 2023. Tripura ranks third among 28 states in terms of having the lowest crime rate. According to the latest NCRB data, the state holds the eighth-lowest position regarding physical assaults and crimes against women. He added that 2024 recorded the lowest crime statistics in the last 10 years. The Chief Minister also acknowledged the commendable role of Tripura Police in conducting peaceful Lok Sabha and Panchayat elections in 2024, which earned appreciation from the Election Commission.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the police are a key source of hope for justice for vulnerable people. He pointed out significant reductions in various types of crimes in 2024: property-related crimes decreased by 45%, physical crimes by 38%, riots by 75%, assault cases by 37.2%, and crimes against women by 55%. He noted that on September 24, 2024, in Jampui Hill, 1,173 NLFT and ATTF members surrendered arms and returned to normal life, making Tripura a terrorism-free state.
Regarding the anti-drug campaign, Tripura Police have been actively combating drug trafficking. Over the last three years, 1,666 NDPS cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 3,079 individuals. In 2024, narcotics worth approximately ₹867 crores were seized, marking a 106% increase from 2023. As part of the anti-drug campaign, around 1.64 crore cannabis plants were destroyed in 2024, representing a 132% increase from the previous year. Additionally, illegal cannabis cultivation and smuggling were curbed with the support of other forces and agencies.
The Chief Minister highlighted strict action against illegal immigration. Despite various challenges, Tripura Police have taken strong measures against illegal Bangladeshi, Rohingya, and other foreign nationals entering the state. Cases against Bangladeshi infiltrators increased by 18%, while arrests rose by 36.6% compared to 2023.
In the past year, Tripura Police took swift action against cybercrime, freezing ₹286 crores in bank accounts and recovering ₹17.61 lakhs for victims. The emergency number ‘112’ was launched on December 10, 2019, under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) project. During the recent flood, 53 TSR teams consisting of 765 personnel rescued over 6,200 people and repaired 51 landslide sites. Moreover, 109 district police teams carried out rescue operations at 384 locations.
The Chief Minister also mentioned recent initiatives to enhance the welfare of police personnel, including increases in ration money, DA, and uniform allowances. The honorarium for SPOs and Special Executives has been raised to ₹12,000 and ₹13,000, respectively. Over 5,000 Tripura Police personnel have received training on three new criminal laws. The government plans to expand infrastructure by establishing new police stations, outposts, and cyber police stations.
Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan also addressed the gathering. Several officers were honored for their exemplary performance in 2024. Former police officer Kajal Ghosh received the Lifetime Achiever Award. Naik Subedar Bipul Karjee was recognized as the Best Clerk in TSR, while Head Clerk Uttam Biswas was awarded for the Civil Police Unit. Sub-Inspector Sanjay Majumdar was named Best Investigating Officer. Additional SP Dhruva Nath won the Police Man of the Year Award. The New Capital Complex Police Station was recognized for excellence in technology use, while Kamalpur Police Station earned the Best Beat Management Award. Birganj and Damchhara Police Stations jointly won Best Police Station honors, and Dhalai district was recognized for Beat Management. KTDS Police Training Academy was named the Best Technology-Driven Unit, and the Third Battalion was awarded Best TSR Battalion.
The Chief Minister presented trophies and certificates to the awardees and offered financial assistance to the families of two police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. The event was attended by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, the Chief Minister’s Secretary Dr. Pradip Kumar Chakraborty, and other dignitaries. FD JK
