Agartala, Apr 10 (FD) In a shocking incident that underscores the rising menace of land grabbing in Tripura, a woman died while her husband and daughter remain critical after an alleged suicide attempt in Kakraban under Udaipur subdivision.
The deceased has been identified as Sita Rani Das. Her husband, Niranjan Das, and daughter, Monti Das, are undergoing treatment in critical condition at GB Hospital.
Alleged Land Dispute and Harassment
According to preliminary reports, the family had been residing on their ancestral land for years when a local individual allegedly attempted to forcibly captured the property. The family reportedly faced repeated threats and intimidation whenever they resisted the alleged encroachment.
Sources said that despite prolonged harassment and appeals for intervention, the family did not receive effective administrative support, leaving them increasingly vulnerable.
Desperate Step Amid Mounting Pressure
Unable to withstand the sustained pressure and fear, Niranjan Das, along with his wife and daughter, allegedly consumed pesticide outside their residence in an apparent suicide attempt.
Their son, who was not at home at the time, later found them lying unconscious after a frantic search. The three were immediately rushed to a nearby health facility and subsequently referred to Hapania Hospital.
One Dead, Two Critical
Sita Rani Das succumbed during treatment at Hapania Hospital. With the condition of Niranjan Das and his daughter deteriorating, both were shifted to GB Hospital, where they continue to battle for survival.
The incident has sparked widespread concern in the locality, with fresh allegations of land mafia activity and administrative inaction coming to the fore.
The extreme step taken by three members of a single family over a land dispute has raised serious questions about law enforcement response and the protection of vulnerable citizens in rural Tripura. FD JK
