LA 2028: Cricket to feature six teams each in men’s & women’s events

Cricket is set to make a historic return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028, where it will be played in the popular T20 format. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board approved the event programme and athlete quotas just yesterday, confirming that six teams each will compete in both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments.
Each participating team will consist of a 15-member squad, with a total of 90 athlete quotas allocated per gender. While this marks a significant step forward for the sport’s global recognition, the specific venues for the cricket matches at LA 2028 are yet to be finalised by the organisers.
Cricket joins four other new sports in being added to the Olympic roster for LA 2028. The IOC had approved the inclusion of cricket alongside baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash two years ago. The reintroduction of cricket into the Olympics, more than a century after its last appearance in 1900, highlights the growing global appeal of the sport, particularly in T20 format, which is fast-paced and fan-friendly.
