Agartala, Oct 8 (FD) West Bengal Trinamool Congress general secretary Kunal Ghosh on Wednesday strongly condemned the conduct of Tripura Police and BJP supporters at Agartala Airport, alleging that they were responsible for detaining him upon arrival.
Addressing reporters at the Trinamool Congress office on Chittaranjan Road in Agartala, Ghosh said the police and security personnel posted at the airport should have acted more responsibly to ensure the safety of him and Trinamool MP Sayani Ghosh.
“Ultimately, the police provided us security and escorted us to our party office, but they should have been more proactive inside the airport itself. You cannot restrict the free movement of a citizen and a political leader, as that right is guaranteed by the Constitution,” Ghosh said.
He was accompanied by MP Sayani Ghosh, Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, and Trinamool youth leader Sudipta Raha during the media interaction.
Commenting on recent violence in West Bengal, Ghosh said, “The attacks on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Sankar Ghosh are highly condemnable. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has personally condemned the incident and met both the injured leaders in the hospital.” He further expressed regret that while the West Bengal government ensures peaceful visits for leaders from other states, his own experience in Tripura was unpleasant. “We always facilitate other parties to hold meetings and events in our state, but what we faced here was truly disappointing,” he added.
Later, Ghosh, along with other Trinamool leaders, met Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar and apprised him of the situation, particularly the recent vandalism at the party’s Chittaranjan Road office. Ghosh also demanded adequate security arrangements for party leaders and workers to enable smooth political activities.
The DGP reportedly assured the delegation that the police would take necessary steps to provide full protection to Trinamool leaders and supporters. FD JK
