Agartala, Sep 02 (FD) The Kamalasagar border haat, nestled on the Indo-Bangla borders of Sepahijala district, is gearing up for a grand reopening before of Durga Puja. While the revival process could have commenced earlier, it was temporarily delayed due to elections in two assembly constituencies, according to a senior official of the Tripura government.
District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar said, "We are making every effort to resume operations at the border. Once the election proceedings conclude, the remaining steps will swiftly follow, and the market will be reopened to the public. It is highly probable that we can restart the market before Durga Puja."
Kamalasagar border haat is one of two such markets that were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the Srinagar border haat in South Tripura district reopened a few months ago, Kamalasagar's remained shuttered. This reopening is anticipated to rejuvenate trade and cultural interactions between India and Bangladesh.
The Kamalasagar border haat holds significance, with approximately a hundred registered vendors from both India and Bangladesh setting up stalls on the weekly market day. These markets draw thousands of people who gather to purchase unique products from both nations.
Furthermore, plans for seven additional border haats in various parts of the state are underway, with detailed project reports already submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce for approval. Two of these projects are in progress in Dharmanagar and Kamalpur in North Tripura and Dhalai districts. If approved, these new projects will ensure that every district in Tripura has at least one border trading point with Bangladesh, promoting trade and cultural exchanges at a regional level. FD SB JK
