Jitendra Chowdhury appointed as Leader of opposition in Tripura assembly

Agartala, Mar 20 (FD) Veteran communist leader and MLA, Jitendra Chowdhury was today appointed as the Leader of the opposition as the former opposition party in the Tripura assembly; Tipra Motha had joined the BJP led government in the state.
Speaker of the Tripura assembly, Biswabandhu Sen said, “As Tipra Motha is now an ally of the ruling BJP and the party has also joined the government space was created for CPI-M to get the post of the Leader of the opposition. I have received a letter from the CPI-M party for appointing Jitendra Chowdhury to be the Leader of the opposition. Today I have given the appointment”.
Chowdhury, after being appointed as the Leader of the opposition said in a democracy the opposition parties have very important role to play.
“I was playing the role of opposition in the assembly as the leader of the CPI-M. Today I am happy to be the officially designated Leader of the opposition”, Chowdhury told reporters.
13 MLAs of Tipra Motha joined the government on March 7 last and two MLAs of the party took oath as ministers on the same day.
The opposition CPI-M has 10 MLAs and Congress has three.
The Tipra Motha had signed a tripartite agreement with the central and state governments in New Delhi on March 2 for a solution to all issues of indigenous people related to culture, political and economic rights. FD JK
