Agartala, May 28 (FD) Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led governments at both the Centre and in Tripura, alleging that criminal activities in the state were increasing under political patronage and that law enforcement agencies were unable to function independently.
Addressing a press conference at the CPI(M) state headquarters in Agartala, Chaudhury claimed that an alleged nexus between sections of the ruling party and criminal elements had created a disturbing situation across the state. He questioned the functioning of the police administration and alleged that police personnel at police station and district levels were working under political pressure.
According to the senior CPI(M) leader, effective policing becomes difficult when law enforcement agencies are influenced by political leadership. He further alleged that several persons arrested in recent criminal cases had links with the BJP at Morcha and Mandal levels.
Chaudhury also accused certain senior BJP leaders of maintaining connections with illegal activities, including alleged drug-related networks, and claimed that such political influence was obstructing strict legal action against offenders.
Turning to national issues, the CPI(M) Politburo member criticised the Central government’s economic and foreign policies, alleging that several policy decisions had negatively impacted the country and increased hardships for common citizens.
He further reiterated that the CPI(M) continues to remain the principal opposition force in Tripura and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to opposition unity under the INDIA alliance at the national level.
At the same time, Chaudhury emphasized that political parties claiming to oppose the BJP must reflect that stand through their political actions and public positions. FD JK
