Agartala, Apr 10 (FD) The Jain community of Tripura came together with great devotion and enthusiasm to celebrate the 2624th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism, at the Mahavir/Jain Temple in Palace Compound, Agartala. The event was marked by the presence of hundreds of devotees, including prominent members of society, who participated in religious activities to honour the teachings and legacy of Lord Mahavir.
From the early morning hours, the temple witnessed various religious rituals, including prayers, chanting of bhajans, kirtans, and the recitation of the Navkar Mantra. Across the country, members of the Jain community engaged in similar spiritual observances to mark this significant occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Tarun Kumar Jain, Chairman of the Mahavir Religious Trust, elaborated on the significance of Lord Mahavir’s teachings. He explained that according to Jain philosophy, a Tirthankara is an Arihant — one who has conquered inner enemies and attained supreme knowledge. Lord Mahavir, he noted, spread his wisdom through compassion, meditation, and realization, inspiring a way of life rooted in truth, celibacy, non-violence, forgiveness, and non-possessiveness.
He emphasized that Jainism is not only a spiritual path but also a scientifically grounded and health-conscious way of living. Jains follow a strict vegetarian diet, consume food before sunset, and drink boiled water — practices that align with modern health research and environmental sustainability.
Highlighting Lord Mahavir’s deep concern for environmental balance, Shri Tarun Kumar Jain reminded attendees that Jainism, thousands of years ago, taught that all living beings — including plants — have life and emotions. The teachings also addressed environmental issues like noise and air pollution, advocating respect and protection for all forms of life.
The celebration also brought attention to the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — which Jainism promotes through religious harmony and universal brotherhood. Shri Jain noted that Jain followers respect all religions and uphold Anekantavada (non-absolutism), believing that truth can be viewed from multiple perspectives.
In his speech, Shri Jain also acknowledged the contribution of the Anuvrat Movement, initiated by Acharya Tulsi Muni, which encourages moral living and self-discipline. This movement has been praised by global figures, including former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, for its efforts towards social transformation.
This year, the Jain International Trade Organization (JITO) declared April 9 as International Navkar Mantra Day, where millions recited the mantra for world peace. Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi joined the celebrations in Delhi, praying for global harmony.
Shri Jain concluded by reiterating Lord Mahavir’s legacy as the greatest advocate of non-violence. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he said that Lord Mahavir’s teachings of truth and non-violence continue to inspire the world toward a more compassionate and peaceful future. FD SB
