Agartala, Apr 12 (FD) Allegations of polling irregularities emerged from parts of Tripura during the ADC elections on Sunday, including constituencies represented by state minister Ratan Lal Nath, raising concerns over the conduct of voting in sensitive areas.
Nath claimed that BJP polling agents were prevented from entering at least six to seven booths in the 13-Simna Tamakari and 14-Bodhjungnagar-Wakinagar constituencies. He alleged that threats from Tipra Motha supporters forced agents to leave, disrupting polling. The situation was later brought under control following intervention by police and the administration, allowing agents to resume duties.
The minister also referred to an alleged attack on a BJP candidate in Mandai, terming it unfortunate, while noting that authorities acted to restore normalcy.
Similar allegations were made by CPI(M) candidate Radhacharan Debbarma, who claimed his party’s polling agents were driven out from several booths and attacked by miscreants. He also alleged malfunctioning of EVMs in some polling stations during the afternoon, raising questions over the fairness of the process.
Despite these claims, polling continued with significant voter participation across ADC areas.
Meanwhile, Tipra Motha leader and minister Animesh Debbarma cast his vote early in the day at Ramchandraghat and appealed to voters to maintain peace and participate responsibly.
The leader of the opposition and the Secretary of the Tripura unit of CPI(M), Jitendra chowdhury, who cast his votes in Sabroom subdivision alleged a large scale violence and booth capturing by the supporters of Tipra Motha and reducing the elections into farce.
The spokesperson of the State Election Commission, Anurag Sen said the situation was being closely monitored, with security forces deployed to ensure orderly polling across the region. FD JK
