Agartala, Sept 13 (FD) Tension gripped the Indo-Bangladesh border area in Putia under Boxanagar police station this morning after an Indian smuggler was seriously injured in firing by patrolling Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.
The injured, identified as Kabir Hossain (35), a known smuggler and resident of Putia village, had gone near the barbed wire fencing to deliver a consignment of smuggled goods to his Bangladeshi counterparts waiting on the other side. According to sources, the BSF’s 149 Battalion personnel on patrol noticed Hossain’s suspicious movement and ordered him to stop for a mandatory search. However, Hossain reportedly attempted to flee, prompting the BSF jawans to open fire.
Hossain collapsed on the spot with serious injuries caused by excessive bleeding. He was immediately rescued by BSF personnel and local villagers and rushed to Bishalgarh Sub-divisional Hospital. Later, he was referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala, where his condition remains critical.
Local sources said the incident has triggered resentment among villagers in Putia, where smuggling is reportedly widespread. Residents alleged that the present BSF contingent posted at the Putia Border Outpost (BOP) is “trigger-happy” and had earlier been accused of assaulting a local gram pradhan.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as tensions persist in the border area, which has long been identified as a hotspot for cross-border smuggling activities. FD JK
