Agartala, Jan 19 (FD): Hours after elections for the sixty-member assembly in Tripura was declared violence began to spread in the north eastern state.
Tension ran high at Majlishpur constituency, about 20 km from here following incidents of attacks at a bike rally of opposition Congress in four places in which at least ten persons including AICC general secretary Ajay Kumar, were injured, police said.
However, the Congress alleged that 15 activists and leaders of their party were injured when the ruling BJP sheltered goons had attacked the rally hours after the elections for the state assembly was announced last evening.
On the other hand, state minister for Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA), Sushanta Chowdhury, who represents the constituency, said that a bike rally of the Congress had vandalized a BJP office without any provocation.
However, he denied that any BJP activist was involved in the incidents of attacks in Congress bike rally.
Assistant Inspector General (Law & Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said, “A bike rally of the Congress was attacked by unknown miscreants in which ten persons were injured, among the injured two were admitted to G B Pant hospital here and police is investigating the case”.
He said, additional security forces were deployed in the area to defuse tension and the situation was under control.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, one Pranajit Namasudra (44), an activist of Tipra Motha, ruling party in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) was killed last night at Brhmacherra in Dhalai district, about 100 km from here on Thursday, police said.
Additional Superintendent of Police Binoy Kishore Debbarma told reporters that when Namasudra was returning home along with one of his friends was stopped by unknown miscreants and was hit by sharp weapons.
On receipt of the information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the victim and took him to Kamalpur hospital from where he was shifted to the Kulai district hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
He said, four persons were arrested in this connection.
Chairman of the Tipra Motha, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma appealed for maintaining peace and calm.
"Please don't react or do anything. I am personally verifying what has happened! Last thing we need is violence in the build up to the election," he wrote in his official social media handle. FD JK
