Incidents of human right violation is on the rise in Tripura: THRC

Agartala, Nov 6 (FD) Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) today expressed concern that the incidents of violation of human rights is on the rise in the state.
Chairman of the human rights body, retired Justice SC Das said, the incidents of violation of human rights are on the rise in the north eastern state.
20 complaint based cases and 36 Suo Muto cases are yet to be disposed of, he said.
Das claimed that the quasi judicial body has disposed of as many as 813 cases in the last eight years (till October 31, 2024) out of 869 total cases it had taken cognizance of and as many as 56 cases are pending for disposal.
He said, out of the 869 total cases, 358 cases are based on specific complaints while the rest of 511 cases are of suo motu cognizance.
Das also mentioned that suo motu cases were taken from the media reporting adding that when the body encounters with cases like right to life and right to equality, right to liberty, right to dignity, had been violated regardless of his or her race, religion and, sex and nationality the right body initiates action suo motu.
In 2016 only 17 complaints and 08 suo motu cases were taken up by the Commission. In 2018, the number of complaints stood at 21 and the number of suo moto cases were 28. But, in 2023, The Commission received 94 complaints of human rights violation and 10 cases were registered through Suo Muto cognizance. Till October 31, 2024, a total of 108 cases had been registered out of which 25 are suo moto cases and rest of the 83 are based on specific complaints, a press statement issued by the body said. FD JK
