Agartala, Feb 27 (FD) Even as warning was sounded for the illegal occupiers in the Lake Chowmuhani market several times for taking away their belongings and vacate the place, the forces of the Municipal Corporation along with Tripura police today demolished the illegal structures.
For a long time, there had been complaints that some unscrupulous traders were illegally operating liquor stalls and engaging in unauthorized transactions to occupy space at Lake Chowmuhani Market. To investigate these allegations, Mayor Deepak Majumdar personally inspected the area two to three times. Later, he held a meeting with all market members and decided to demolish the illegal shops. The shopkeepers were given time to remove the structures voluntarily, but as they failed to do so, the municipal corporation demolished more than 100 illegal shops in the early hours of Thursday.
Today, Mayor Deepak Majumdar revisited the site. He urged the opposition to refrain from politicizing developmental initiatives and instead contribute to progress. He stated that efforts are being made to modernize and scientifically develop every market within the municipal area. Acknowledging the hardships faced by those affected by the demolition, he assured that the BJP government is empathetic and will work to clear the market within a month to provide them with legal business opportunities.
The mayor further emphasized that illegal shop construction and the dumping of market waste into nearby canals had led to foul odors and an increase in mosquito breeding. Additionally, unauthorized shop construction near the riverbanks was damaging the embankments. He assured that similar drives against illegal activities and corruption would continue in other markets as well, not just at Lake Chowmuhani Market.
Addressing the opposition’s stance, he mentioned that when illegal drug dens were demolished at Battala Market, the opposition supported the offenders. However, as a result of these actions, the market has now become more spacious, and even opposition members visit it for shopping. He urged them to prioritize development over politics.
During today's inspection, the mayor was accompanied by Amitabh Bhattacharya, the Mandal President of Ramnagar Assembly Constituency, along with other officials.
