Agartala Oct 12 (FD): President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said after becoming the President she opted to visit the north eastern states of the country for which she has a special feeling in mind.
During a civic reception accorded to her at the Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan here, Murmu said, the country’s economic condition has stood on a solid foundation, which would reach to a five trillion economy in 2025 and the north eastern states have a strong contribution to it.
She inaugurated the National Law University (NLU) at Narsingarh in West Tripuram district after reaching the Northeastern state on a maiden two-day visit at 11.15 am. She was received at the airport by Chief Minister Manik Saha, Governor Satya Narayan Arya, and Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhoumik. She was accorded guard of honour by the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) at the airport.
From the airport, she went to Narsingarh to take part in the inaugural function, which was also attended by the chief minister and Tripura High Court Chief Justice Indrajit Mohanty and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath was present at the programme.
Murmu then visited the Durgabari tea estate in the district's Mohanpur subdivision, and interacted with tea garden workers. During her interactions she told the guardians of the tea workers to send their children to schools regularly and also asked them if they were getting free rice and benefits of other government schemes.
The tea garden workers told the president they were getting free rations. A cultural programme was also organised in honour of the president at the garden.
She was accorded a civic reception by the state administration, from where she virtually inaugurated the MLA hostel at Capital Complex, and virtually lay the foundation stones for various Tripura government projects related to roads, schools and hostels for students. The president also launch the Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Museum and Cultural Centre at Agartala and the IIIT-Agartala from the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhaban.
On Thursday, the president will flag off the special extension of the Guwahati-Kolkata-Guwahati train up to Agartala and the extension of the Agartala-Jiribam-Agartala Jan Shatabdi Express up to Khongsang in Manipur. Murmu will also inaugurate the transhipment yard at Nischintapur, 6 km away from Agartala.
She will visit the famed Tripureswari temple in Udaipur and offer prayers. Murmu is scheduled to leave the state for Guwahati around 11.40 am on Thursday, officials said. FD JK
