By News On Air Apr 20, 2025
Heavy snowfall and sleet have lashed Ladakh since Saturday, prompting the Leh Hill Council to issue a high alert for all emergency services. Chief Executive Councillor Tashi Gyalson has directed key officials-including the Deputy Commissioner, SSP, SDMs, and Tehsildars-to stay vigilant and respond swiftly to any distress calls. The Disaster Response Team has also been placed on standby.
Agriculture and horticulture sectors have suffered, with apricot orchards hit particularly hard. Authorities have been asked to assess damage to public property and livelihood infrastructure immediately.
Leh faced an eight-hour power outage due to damaged lines, though supply has now been restored. Meanwhile, the Leh-Srinagar Highway and other major roads remain closed due to landslides, and all flights to Leh were canceled on Sunday.
Residents and tourists have been urged to follow safety advisories as the administration works to manage the crisis.
