Agartala, JUN 19 (FD) Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in the capital city of Agartala and other parts of the state, leading to widespread flooding and disruption of normal life. While no casualties have been reported, the incessant rainfall has caused significant inconvenience and damage to property.
The city of Agartala found itself submerged in knee-deep water as the heavy downpour continued for several hours. The situation was aggravated by water logging on most roads, including the airport road, bringing traffic to a standstill. Furthermore, the rainfall led to the uprooting of numerous trees, posing additional hazards to the residents.
Prompt action was taken by the authorities to clear the rainwater from the roads using pump stations once the rainfall subsided. However, the damage had already been done, with several vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, suffering substantial losses.
In one alarming incident near Netaji Club in the Ujan Abhoynagar area, around seven vehicles were reportedly washed away by the force of the rainwater. Additionally, a massive 'krishnachura tree' collapsed in Jagannath Bari Park, resulting in partial damage to the park's sidewall.
Meteorological sources have recorded an impressive 067.1 mm rainfall in Agartala until 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. While the water levels in rivers rose, they fortunately remained below the expected flood level by evening.
The adverse weather conditions also caused partial damage to houses in Sonamura and Kamalpur due to thunderstorms and strong winds. However, local administrations have already provided assistance to the affected families.
Various subdivisions experienced significant damage and power supply disruptions. Efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, and Fire Service personnel were deployed to clear roads and restore normalcy. The authorities are actively working to provide assistance to affected individuals and address the damages caused by the heavy showers. FD SB JK
