Agartala, July 28 (FD) Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Tuesday stressed that environmental conservation cannot be achieved through government initiatives alone and called upon every individual, family and community to actively participate in protecting nature. Addressing a programme organised at Heritage Park in Agartala on the occasion of World Nature Conservation Day, the Governor said preserving Tripura's rich natural heritage is a collective responsibility that requires sustained public participation.
Marking the occasion, the Governor planted a sapling of a Nageshwar (Indian rosechestnut) tree within the Heritage Park premises, symbolising the state's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
In his address, Governor Nallu urged citizens to safeguard Tripura's rich biodiversity for future generations. He envisioned a future where the state's forests become even more vibrant, rivers remain clean, the air stays pure and communities continue to thrive in harmony with nature. He said such a vision can only be realised when conservation practices become part of everyday life at the household and community levels.
Highlighting the significance of Tripura's forests, the Governor described them as much more than green landscapes, calling them the lifeblood of the state. He noted that forests covering nearly 1.5 million hectares serve as a vital pillar of the rural economy while providing livelihoods to a large number of tribal communities and people dependent on forest resources.
Emphasising the growing challenges posed by climate change, the Governor said the state must now move beyond conservation towards transformation. He advocated integrating climate-resilient agriculture into Tripura's State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) to strengthen the resilience of farmers and rural communities. He also stressed the need for stronger institutional coordination, participatory planning and decentralised resource centres so that farmers and villagers can access the knowledge, technology and materials required to adapt to changing climatic conditions.
Calling for practical environmental action, Governor Nallu encouraged people to plant native tree species in their localities to create habitats for birds and insects, reduce soil erosion, conserve water through rainwater harvesting and minimise the use of single-use plastics by following the principles of "reduce, reuse and recycle."
Principal Secretary and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force (HoFF), Ravindra Kumar Samal, highlighted the Forest Department's ongoing initiatives for biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management and the protection of the state's natural resources. He underlined the department's commitment to balancing ecological preservation with sustainable development.
The programme also featured a welcome address by Prasada Rao Vaddarapu, Chief Executive Officer of the Tripura Parks and Garden Society, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Sanjay Majumdar, Additional Director of the Society.
Among those present were Praveen L. Agarwal, Managing Director and PCCF of the Tripura Forest Development and Plantation Corporation (TFDPC); Dr. K. Shashikumar, PCCF (Administration, Public Relations and Vigilance); and Chaitanya Murthy, Chief Wildlife Warden and Member-Secretary of the Tripura Biodiversity Board, who also addressed the gathering, reaffirming the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure environmental conservation and sustainable management of Tripura's natural resources.
