Agartala, Aug 2 (FD) Governor of Tripura Indra Sena Reddy Nallu virtually participated in the launch of the Nasha Mukt Yuva Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and called upon every citizen of the state to actively contribute towards building a drug-free society. The programme was organized at the Conference Hall of the Academic Building of Tripura Central University through a joint initiative of MY Bharat and Tripura Central University.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor emphasized that the campaign is far more than a government initiative and should be embraced as a people's movement. He appealed to parents to educate their children about the harmful effects of drug abuse, teachers to guide students towards responsible living, community leaders to inspire society through their actions, and young people to firmly reject drugs while encouraging their peers to do the same.
Highlighting the Government of India's efforts under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Governor stated that continuous and effective measures have been taken since 2014 to combat drug addiction across the country. He noted that the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, as the nodal ministry for reducing drug demand, has introduced the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR). The programme focuses on prevention, awareness generation, identification of substance abuse, counselling, treatment, and rehabilitation.
The Governor further explained that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA), launched on August 15, 2020, is a flagship initiative under NAPDDR. Initially covering 272 vulnerable districts, the campaign has now been expanded to all districts nationwide, reflecting the Government's commitment to eliminating drug abuse.
He also outlined the three key pillars of the initiative—strict control of drug supply through the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), awareness and outreach programmes led by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and treatment and rehabilitation services provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Expressing concern over Tripura's strategic geographical location and sensitive international border, Governor Nallu warned that the state remains vulnerable to illegal drug trafficking. He said drug networks continue targeting young people, leading many towards addiction and creating serious social and health challenges. He stressed that only coordinated efforts involving the Central and State Governments, educational institutions, civil society organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the general public can effectively eliminate the menace.
During the programme, the Governor administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat pledge to all participants, reaffirming the collective commitment to creating a healthier and addiction-free society.
The event was attended by Prof. Debabrata Das, Vice-Chancellor of Tripura Central University; Tapan Kumar Das, Special Secretary of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department; Dr. Vishal Kumar, District Magistrate of West Tripura; Mehboob Alam Laskar, Director of MY Bharat Tripura; MY Bharat volunteers, faculty members, students, and other distinguished guests.
According to information released by Lok Bhavan, the campaign aims to strengthen public awareness, encourage youth participation, and promote coordinated action to achieve the vision of a drug-free and developed India. FD SB
