Agartala, Apr 16 (FD) The suicide of Prabir Lodh, a government employee in West Tripura, has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the police's role in alleged harassment.
The incident followed the detention of Lodh by the East Agartala women police on the basis of a complaint of rape attempt filed by a widow who is also an employee of the same office.
According to reports, Lodh was called to appear in the police station by woman police officer Mousumi Debbarma on Thursday evening, but was released after his lawyer arrived.
He was allegedly subjected to serious harassment before being released and was asked to reappear at the police station to mutually dispose of the case by 11 am on Thursday.
Shamed and distraught at the police's high-handedness, Lodh committed suicide on Thursday morning, triggering a strong reaction from the public.
Demand for action against police officer Debbarma has been raised and the incident has caused social media to erupt in protest.
The Tripura Commission for Women has also taken up the case. According to sources, the name of a Reang woman employee has also been implicated in the incident for allegedly pressuring the police officer to pursue the case with "special interest". FD PD
