Agartala, May 26 (FD) Four police personnel attached to Teliamura police station in Tripura’s Khowai district were on Monday remanded to five days of police custody in connection with the alleged misappropriation and illegal diversion of seized narcotic substances, including banned Phensedyl cough syrup bottles.
The accused have been identified as Sub-Inspector Sampa Das, Inspector and second officer-in-charge Ajit Debbarma, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sachindra Debbarma and Sub-Inspector Rajendra Reang.
According to official sources, allegations surfaced that the police personnel were involved in assisting narcotics smugglers and unlawfully diverting seized contraband materials from police custody.
Following a complaint lodged by the Additional Superintendent of Police, a formal case was registered at Teliamura police station. Subsequently, Khowai Superintendent of Police B. Jagadishwar Reddy constituted a special investigation team to probe the allegations.
Preliminary investigation reportedly revealed the involvement of the accused officials, following which all four were suspended from service and later arrested under relevant legal provisions.
In view of the gravity and sensitivity of the matter, Tripura Police headquarters later transferred the investigation to the State Crime Branch for a comprehensive inquiry.
On Monday, the investigating officer of the Crime Branch produced the accused before the Khowai District and Sessions Court and sought seven days’ police remand for custodial interrogation.
After hearing arguments from both sides, District and Sessions Judge Manabendra Debbarma granted five days’ police remand. The accused are scheduled to be produced before the court again on May 30.
The case is linked to a seizure operation carried out on May 20 during mobile duty in the Maharanipur area under Teliamura subdivision, where police had seized a substantial quantity of Phensedyl cough syrup.
Investigators suspect that around 1,381 bottles from the seized consignment were allegedly diverted and sold illegally instead of being deposited as official seizure material.
Officials said the investigation is continuing to ascertain the full extent of the alleged racket and to identify any additional individuals who may have been involved. FD JK
