Agartala, May 18 (FD) In a tragic road accident near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Longtharai Valley subdivision of Dhalai district, four labourers were killed and six others injured after a truck laden with stone chips overturned late on Sunday night.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Longtharai Valley, Sonacharan Jamatia, said the truck was travelling from Chawmanu to the Biju Border Out Post carrying stone chips for ongoing infrastructure work along the international border.
According to police, the accident took place while the vehicle was attempting to negotiate a steep stretch of road reportedly in poor condition. The truck failed to climb the incline and overturned while reversing, throwing several labourers seated atop the load onto the road. Moments later, a large quantity of stone chips collapsed on them, burying them underneath.
“The four labourers sitting on top of the loaded vehicle died on the spot after being buried under the stone chips, while those travelling inside the cabin survived,” the SDPO said.
Personnel from nearby Border Security Force (BSF) camps rushed to the spot soon after the incident and launched rescue operations. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where doctors declared four labourers brought dead.
The deceased were identified as Balidhanjoy Tripura (47), Majida Tripura (50), Bathojoy Tripura (39), and Narjoy Tripura (36).
Six others sustained injuries in the mishap, with the condition of one reported to be critical. Most of the injured were travelling inside the truck cabin at the time of the accident.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident. FD JK
