Agartala, Mar 24 (FD) Four fishermen, who were fishing in the s Four fishermen drown in Dumbur Lake during Tripura thunderstorm rawling Dumbur Lake in Dhalai district, drowned as the thunderstorm lashed different parts of Tripura last night.
Police, quoting eyewitnesses, said many fishermen had gone to the middle of the lake at midnight to catch fish when a strong thunderstorm coupled with wind struck the state last night.
The fishermen, out of fear of burning in the lightning, jumped from the boats into the lake and tried to swim across to the bank but drowned due to the heavy wind.
Three of the four dead bodies of the fishermen were recovered this morning by the disaster management team and Fire Brigade, and one body is still untraceable.
Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed deep shock over the deaths of the fishermen.
“I have received information about the deaths of four fishermen due to a heavy storm who went to Dumbur Lake to catch fish. The administration and police have already taken follow-up action after the tragic incident. One body has already been recovered while the operation is still ongoing. I convey my condolences to the bereaved families, and the government will stand by the victim’s family in this difficult time," Saha said in a social media post.
He also said that last night’s thunderstorm had caused extensive damage to Sepahijala, Khowai, and south Tripura districts and assured government assistance for the affected people. FD JK
