Agartala, Sept 21 (FD) The mysterious death of Anjali Sarkar in Mirza, under Kakraban Assembly constituency of Gomati district, has sparked widespread outrage, leading to arrests, police suspensions, and sharp political reactions across Tripura.
The incident came to light on Friday morning when Anjali’s charred body was recovered, triggering allegations of negligence and law-and-order failure. On Saturday evening, police arrested four accused in connection with the case. Those arrested include Anupam Majumder alias Manna—nephew of a sitting MLA—along with Kinkar Das, Litan Das, and Diptanu Das.
Gomati SP Dr. Kiran Kumar confirmed the arrests and said investigations are underway in multiple directions, including earlier complaints filed by the victim. He assured that all leads, including prior threats received by Anjali, are being thoroughly examined.
A major development followed with the suspension of ASI Sanjoy Sarkar of Kakraban Police Station. Official sources revealed that Anjali and her husband had lodged a complaint on September 18, alleging threats from Manna and his associates. Though the Officer-in-Charge had directed ASI Sarkar to act immediately, he allegedly failed to take any steps—an inaction now viewed as a grave lapse possibly linked to the tragedy.
The case has also taken a political turn, with leaders across parties visiting the victim’s residence. From the ruling BJP, Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and MLA Abhishek Debroy met the bereaved family. On the opposition side, senior Congress leaders Birajit Sinha and Sudip Roy Barman visited Mirza, assuring support and later meeting the DGP to demand strict action. CPI (M) leaders also joined in extending solidarity.
The incident has intensified political heat in Tripura, with growing demands for justice and accountability. FD JK
