Agartala, May 31 (FD) The Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) has taken a significant step towards boosting cricket in the state by appointing former South African international cricketer Lance Klusener as the coach for the state cricket team. Known for his aggressive batting and fast-medium swing bowling, Klusener's expertise as an all-rounder is expected to inspire and guide budding cricketers in Tripura.
The decision to hire Klusener as the coach is a result of the efforts made by the new TCA committee, which was formed in October last year. These efforts included infrastructure development, the establishment of new facilities for players, and conducting open trial camps for various cricket positions.
In March, advertisements were published inviting applications from coaches for different teams, and Klusener and former Australian cricketer and Sri Lankan coach Dav Whatmore were among the prominent applicants.
While talks with Whatmore progressed, he withdrew due to personal reasons. However, Klusener agreed to be associated with the TCA for 100 days, commencing with his visit this week. During his stay, Klusener will train and mentor budding cricketers for 20 days initially, with the possibility of extending his tenure in July or August. The TCA also intends to request Klusener's presence for BCCI tournaments in October or December, providing further guidance and support to the state's teams.
TCA Vice President Timir Chanda expressed enthusiasm regarding Klusener's involvement, stating that the former cricketer aims to share his vast experience with players of all levels, including senior teams, junior teams, and girls' teams. Chanda, himself an accomplished cricketer, believes that Klusener's coaching will significantly contribute to Tripura's cricket journey.
The Tripura Cricket Association has been making concerted efforts to develop cricket in the state, and the signing of international cricketer Wriddhiman Saha as the first-class captain last year further exemplifies their commitment. The BJP-led government of Tripura has also been actively pushing for infrastructure development in various sports, including cricket, with plans for an international stadium and efforts to secure approval for hosting international matches in the future.
Recently, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly agreed to become the ambassador of Tripura tourism, further emphasising the potential of cricket in promoting tourism in the state. Ganguly expressed his intention to visit different sports venues in Tripura, including cricket facilities.
The appointment of Lance Klusener as the coach and the overall development initiatives undertaken by the TCA have created a wave of excitement within the cricketing community of Tripura. With these positive steps, Tripura Cricket envisions a bright future, and the TCA committee believes that all stakeholders will reap the benefits of these endeavours. FD JK
