Agartala, Aug 3 (FD) Former BJP MP from East Tripura, Rebati Tripura, has returned to his profession as a government school teacher after his political career came to a pause following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
A postgraduate in Political Science, Rebati began his career as a teacher at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School in Agartala in 2001. He joined the BJP in 2014 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from the East Tripura (ST) constituency in 2019.
The BJP, however, did not renominate him for the 2024 general elections, instead fielding Kriti Devi Debbarman, sister of Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. Although Rebati continued as a member of the BJP's state core committee, he had largely remained inactive in party affairs over the past two-and-a-half years and was also left out of the party's recently announced list of office-bearers.
With no active political responsibilities, Rebati resumed his teaching career at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School on July 20 as a postgraduate teacher.
"For the past two-and-a-half years, I had virtually no political work despite being a member of the party's core committee. Since I have no specific assignment at present, I decided to return to my original profession," Rebati told PTI.
He said returning to the classroom has given him a renewed sense of purpose while also ensuring financial security through government service and post-retirement pension benefits.
"If I enjoy being with the students, I will continue teaching. Otherwise, I may opt for voluntary retirement," he said.
The school's officiating headmaster, Titu Saha, said Rebati has resumed his responsibilities with dedication and sincerity.
"He has quickly established a good rapport with colleagues and students and has been warmly welcomed by the school community," Saha said.
Rebati's return to teaching marks an uncommon transition from Parliament back to the classroom, bringing his journey full circle—from educator to legislator and once again to educator. FD JK
