Agartala, Sept 23 (FD) A fit of rivalry is no uncommon event when the assembly elections are drawing near. However it becomes an issue, if the events turn into something more than healthy rivalry. Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar along with the people gathered at the public meeting was forcefully confined in CPIM local committee office in hapania by alleged BJP workers this Thursday. 25 people were injured, including women.
After repeated refusal of police authority to permit a rally, the gathering was permitted to be held at the hapania party office itself.
Among the attendees present in the gathering were former CM Manik Sarkar, Narayan Deb, CPIM politician Tapan Das, Subrata Chakraborty and other party members.
Following the incident, police soon came to the scene and safely escorted the people from the locked office by evening.
In protest of the unlawful siege of the party office and violent attacks by alleged BJP workers, citizens led by former MLA Manik Dey demonstrated in front of Police headquarters demanding immediate action on perpetrators.
Such violent face offs were no rare event in the last few days. On Wednesday, 11 CPIM workers were injured in an unnecessary attack by alleged BJP members, as they were returning from a party event in Chanban area in Udaipur. The injured victims were admitted to Gomati district hospital.
In response to the recent events, the former CM said that ‘the BJP-IPFT coalition government is moving in the opposite direction in fulfillment of their promise of filling vacancy of job posts. The issues in the state are only growing rapidly. The future of the unemployed is dark. In this situation, there is no other way than to fight. It will be a mistake to think that the problems of many unemployed youths will be solved if the government persists.’
The Additional Superintendent of Police West Tripura (rural) Anirban Das told, “The CPIM party leaders were informed two days back that we can’t allow them for the rally as it could cause law and order breakdown in the area. The BJP also sought permission for a rally that was also cancelled for the same reasons. But, defying the police orders, workers of both parties gathered in the Hapania area which turned the situation volatile. Police and TSR personnel were immediately deployed in adequate numbers to evade any skirmish between the BJP and CPIM workers,”
The protest demonstration led by former state legislative member Manik Dey requested safety and security of the CPIM politicians and demanded actions be taken against the perpetrators. FD DM
