Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has stressed the urgent need for policies that prioritize rural development to curb the rising trend of migration from villages to cities. Speaking at the Kisan Kumbh 2025 event held in New Delhi, Mr. Gadkari highlighted the importance of improving the living standards of farmers and the weaker sections of rural communities.
The minister noted that the agriculture and allied sectors currently contribute only 14 percent to the national GDP, despite being the backbone of rural India. He said that this economic imbalance is pushing people toward urban areas in search of better opportunities.
Gadkari emphasized the importance of equipping farmers with modern technologies and encouraging them to adopt entrepreneurial practices. “Farmers must think beyond traditional methods. By embracing innovation, they can increase productivity and income,” he said.
Encouraging knowledge-sharing, he called on farmers to exchange skills and experiences with one another to promote growth and sustainability in agriculture. He added that such efforts would significantly contribute to the vision of a self-reliant India.
Mr. Gadkari concluded by asserting that rural-focused policies would not only reduce migration but also uplift the overall socio-economic conditions of India’s villages, ensuring balanced national growth.
