Agartala. Feb 4 (FD) Tripura is witnessing significant growth in floriculture as a sustainable livelihood option, with 59,100 farmers currently engaged in flower cultivation across the state, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Tuesday.
The minister was speaking after inaugurating the Vivekananda Pushpa Udyan, a flower garden developed adjacent to Swami Vivekananda College in Mohanpur. The garden has been created on nearly 14 kani of land at a cost of ₹1.75 crore under the initiative of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department.
Addressing the gathering, Nath said both the central and state governments are implementing multiple schemes aimed at improving the socio-economic condition of farmers. Floriculture has been given priority in Tripura as a viable income-generating activity, considering the state’s favorable soil and climatic conditions.
He highlighted the remarkable expansion of flower cultivation since the present government came to power. Earlier, floriculture was practiced on only 2,438 kani of land, involving 2,190 farmers. Currently, flower cultivation has expanded to 11,820 kani of land, with farmer participation rising to 59,100.
The minister also noted a substantial increase in flower production. While earlier production stood at 1,170 metric tonnes, it has now risen to 2,704 metric tonnes. Previously, only 35 percent of the state’s flower demand was met locally, but now nearly 79 percent of the requirement is fulfilled through in-state production.
Expressing optimism, Nath said more farmers are expected to adopt floriculture, helping them become self-reliant and financially empowered.
The event was attended by Mohanpur Panchayat Samiti Chairman Rakesh Deb, Vice Chairman Sanjeev Kumar Das, Mohanpur Municipal Council Chairperson Anita Debnath, Vice Chairperson Shankar Deb, West Tripura Zilla Parishad member Jaylal Das, Swami Vivekananda College Principal Haradhan Saha, agriculture officials, local administrators, social workers, and community representatives. The programme was presided over by Harinakhla Gram Panchayat Pradhan Ajay Deb, while the welcome address was delivered by Horticulture Department Deputy Director Sujit Das. FD SB
