Flood situation worsens across Bihar as major rivers rise

The flood situation in Bihar continues to remain grim. After the Ganga, Gandak and Kosi rivers, the rising water level of the Son River has now affected several areas of North, Central and South Bihar. Our correspondent reports that Floodwaters from the Ganga have spread into low-lying areas of several districts, including Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Samastipur, Patna, Buxar, Bhojpur and Vaishali. Bhagalpur remains the worst-affected district. Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said that although the flood situation in the district is dangerous, it remains under control.

Meanwhile, the water level of the Son River has risen following the release of water from the Bansagar Dam in Rohtas. With the river in spate, all 69 gates of the Indrapuri Barrage have been opened. There is a possibility of water spreading into adjoining riverine and low-lying areas.

In Aurangabad district, rising water levels in the Son, Batane, Punpun, Dhawa, Adari, Madar and Keshhar rivers have affected several villages. In Jehanabad district, the Dardha River is in spate, with floodwaters flowing over three bridges and culverts at Jafarganj, Shakurabad and Sai Mandir. 

Riverine areas in Buxar, Khagaria, Samastipur and Vaishali districts are also affected by floods. Relief and rescue operations are underway in the affected areas.
