About two lakhs of people today attended the festivities and fairs in and around the Mariam Nagar church here on the occasion of Christmas, built in 1939. Lumen Monterio, the Bishop of Tripura said, “We had prayed for brotherhood and peace for all sections of people at midnight, sliced cakes and some people also busted crackers in joy. A two-day fair is also being held at the premises of the church”. The entire area at Mariam Nagar, at the outskirts of the city was illuminated with various lights and decorated; besides musical functions are also being performed. Besides, many school students of the primary level in the city were dressed as Santa Clause during the celebration. The Christians constitute less than 5% of the total populations and around 14% of the state’s tribal populations, who constitute one third of the state’s estimated 40 lakh populations. FD JK
