Agartala, May 6 (FD) Tensions have intensified in Dharmanagar following serious allegations surrounding the death of BJP councillor Rahul Kishore Roy, as his family claims sustained harassment led to his suicide.
The controversy deepened after Roy’s wife, Ananya Bhattacharya, publicly accused former State Women’s Commission chairperson Barnali Goswami and her husband Jawhar Chakraborty of orchestrating a series of events that allegedly forced her husband to take his life. Speaking to media, Ananya—who is five months pregnant—claimed the couple harbored a longstanding and unfounded grudge linked to political tensions dating back to the 2023 Assembly elections.
According to her statement, Goswami had earlier been assaulted by individuals allegedly associated with supporters of late MLA Bishwabandhu Sen. Ananya asserted that her husband was wrongly suspected of involvement in that incident despite not being present. She further alleged that despite Roy’s active support for Chakraborty during a recent by-election, their family was targeted.
Roy’s mother, Anjana Bhattacharya, recounted two alleged attacks on their residence by a group of individuals demanding her son be handed over. She described humiliation and verbal abuse during these incidents, which reportedly left Roy emotionally shattered. His body was later found in the bathroom of their home.
The family has named multiple individuals as alleged attackers and held them responsible for what they describe as an “induced suicide.” Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge Meena Debbarma confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and investigations are underway.
Authorities have assured swift action, including possible arrests, as the case continues to draw political and public attention across the region. FD JK
