EU leaders call President Trump ahead of his talk with President Putin

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday, ahead of his call to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The German government said that the leaders are also planning to have a follow-up call with Trump immediately after he speaks with Russian President Putin today.

A spokesperson for the British government said the leaders also discussed possible sanctions on Russia if Moscow does not seriously agree to a ceasefire and peace talks. U.S. President had earlier said that the call with the Russian President would include not only the war in Ukraine but also trade.
