Agartala, Apr 26 (FD) A new administrative direction has been announced in Tripura’s tribal governance structure, focusing on strengthening accountability and ensuring democratic participation at the grassroots level. The decision is expected to reshape leadership dynamics within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) and influence upcoming local elections.
Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma declared that only elected Village Council members will now be eligible to serve as Chairpersons of zonal and sub-zonal bodies under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. This marks a departure from the earlier system where nominated individuals often occupied these influential positions.
The announcement follows Tipra Motha’s return to power at the ADC headquarters in Khumulwng for a second term. According to Debbarma, the move is designed to enhance transparency and eliminate controversies linked to political nominations. He emphasized that the decision was made after consultations with multiple stakeholders.
Political analysts suggest that this policy shift could significantly increase the importance of the upcoming Village Council elections. Aspirants aiming for leadership roles in zonal and sub-zonal bodies must now secure an electoral mandate, intensifying political competition at the grassroots level.
Debbarma also revealed that he had approached the Supreme Court of India to expedite the Village Council elections. Following judicial directions, the polls are likely to be conducted in June, with administrative preparations already underway.
In a parallel initiative, the leadership announced a comprehensive review of the education system across ADC areas. Student organisations, including the Twipra Students Federation and other Tiprasa groups, will form multiple teams to conduct field inspections of schools.
These teams will assess infrastructure, student attendance, and teacher availability through surprise visits across districts. Reports generated from these inspections will guide future reforms, with the ADC administration committing to data-driven decisions aimed at improving educational outcomes.
The combined initiatives signal a broader governance strategy focused on accountability, grassroots empowerment, and evidence-based policymaking in Tripura’s tribal regions. FD SB
