By Firstdespatch Desk Mar 11, 2025
Agartala, Mar 11 (FD) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited suggestions from all national and state political parties by April 30, 2025, regarding any unresolved issues at the level of the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), District Election Officer (DEO), or the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), as applicable.
In an official letter issued to political parties today, the Commission also proposed an interaction with party presidents and senior members at a mutually convenient time to further strengthen electoral processes in accordance with established laws.
Earlier, during an ECI conference last week, Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar instructed CEOs, DEOs, and EROs of all states and union territories to hold regular interactions with political parties. He emphasized resolving any issues raised in these meetings strictly within the existing legal framework and submitting an action-taken report to the Commission by March 31, 2025. The Commission also encouraged political parties to actively utilize this decentralized engagement mechanism.
Political parties are one of the key stakeholders among the 28 stakeholders identified by the Commission under the constitutional and statutory framework covering all aspects of electoral processes. In its letter to political parties, the Commission highlighted that the Representation of the People Act of 1950 and 1951, the Registration of Electors Rules of 1960, the Conduct of Election Rules of 1961, along with orders from the Hon'ble Supreme Court and various instructions, manuals, and handbooks issued by the Election Commission of India (available on the ECI website), have established a decentralized, robust, and transparent legal framework for conducting free and fair elections.
