Agartala, Nov 22 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Tuesday that the chain of drug smuggling from neighboring Myanmar through Mizoram and Assam borders has emerged as a major problem for the northeastern states of the country.
After inaugurating the two-day conference in presence of police chiefs, IGPs and central police chiefs of all Northeaster states at Prajna Bhavan here, Dr Saha said, the conference with the Northeaster state’s top police officials which is being held here after many years is important in view of dealing with various crimes.
He expressed hope that the top law enforcement agencies of the northeastern state would work together to uproot the menace in the days to come.
Expressing concern over drug trafficking issue Dr Saha said, "The drug supply chain from India’s neighbouring country Myanmar through Mizoram and Assam border has emerged as a major problem for northeastern states.
He said that the drug traffickers are using Tripura as a corridor for drug trafficking from Myanmar to Bangladesh through Mizoram and Assam.
Dr Saha said there will also be discussions on how to curb the smuggling of ganja from the northeastern state (Tripura) to the mainland states, where ganja is being seized almost every day with law enforcement agencies.
Taking on other issues like unfenced border issue, infiltration, Rohingyas, Dr Saha said the issues will also be taken up for discussion in the Conference.
He claimed that the law and order situation in the state has improved in the last four and a half years.
“Police have taken tough measures against anti-social activities and violent crime. The issue of rebellion has also been completely neutralized. And, efforts are underway to prevent this internal crisis from rearing its ugly head," Dr Saha added.
On the infiltration, the Chief Minister said some areas of the international border is still unfenced.
Dr Saha said, "The Central and state governments have already taken up the unfenced border issue with Dhaka to get the border fully fenced. This (infiltration) will also come up in the conference to adopt a strategy to stop infiltration from across the border.”
Dr Saha said he had requested the central government to arrange to complete the fencing and take up with Bangladesh to check infiltration of Rohingya refugees.
On the Rohingya issue, he said, many Rohingya refugees have already been detained in the state and legal action has been taken against the illegal infiltrators.
The 27th conference is being held after three long years due to Covid-19 pandemic. FD PD JK
