Dr. Debabrata Das Appointed Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University

Agartala, July 3 (FD) The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has appointed Dr. Debabrata Das, Advisor to the Higher Education Department of the Government of Assam and former faculty member of Tezpur University, as the new Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University, ending nearly a year of the institution being headed by an Acting Vice-Chancellor.
The appointment was notified by the Department of Higher Education through an official order issued on July 2, 2026. The notification states that the President of India, in his capacity as the Visitor of Tripura University, has appointed Dr. Das to the post for a tenure of five years from the date he assumes office or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.
According to the notification, the terms and conditions of his appointment will be governed by the provisions of the Tripura University Act, as well as the university's Statutes and Ordinances.
The appointment brings to a close the interim administrative arrangement under Prof. Shyamal Das of the Department of English, who had been serving as the Acting Vice-Chancellor since August 2025. During his tenure, Prof. Das oversaw the university's academic and administrative affairs while the process for appointing a regular Vice-Chancellor was underway.
Dr. Debabrata Das is a seasoned academic and higher education administrator with extensive experience in university governance and policy formulation. As Advisor to Assam's Higher Education Department, he has been associated with several initiatives aimed at strengthening higher education institutions in the state. He has also served as a faculty member at Tezpur University, contributing significantly to academics and research.
His appointment is expected to provide stable leadership to Tripura University at a crucial juncture as the Central University seeks to enhance academic standards, expand research and innovation, strengthen institutional governance, and accelerate the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Ministry has circulated the appointment order to the Registrar of Tripura University, the Government of Assam, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and other concerned authorities for necessary action. FD JK
